How to Uninstall Apps on Samsung Smart TVs: 4 Easy Steps

Uninstall apps from your Samsung Smart TV in only 4 steps, freeing up storage and keeping your Home screen organized.

How to uninstall apps on Samsung Smart TV: The quick version

Step What to do
1. Open Home and go to Apps Press the Home button on your Samsung remote until the main menu and app row appear. Then, use the arrow keys to highlight the “Apps” icon and press Select or OK to open it.
2. Open App Settings In the Apps screen, move to the Settings gear icon (usually at the top right) and select it to see all installed apps and controls.
3. Highlight the app and open options Scroll through the list of apps and stop on the one you no longer use or that’s causing problems. Then, press and hold the Select or OK button (or use the on-screen options) until the Options menu appears.
4. Delete the app and finish up In the options menu, choose “Delete” and confirm when the TV asks if you’re sure. Repeat for any other apps you want to uninstall, then press Home to return to a cleaner TV screen.

Step 1: Open Home and go to the Apps

I always start from the Home screen so I can reach both my apps and Settings in a couple of clicks. From there, I jump straight into the Apps area, where all the install and uninstall controls live.

Here’s how I get from the Home screen into the Apps area:

  • Press the Home button on your Samsung remote.
  • Wait until the main menu and app row appear at the bottom of the screen.
  • From the Home screen, use the left and right arrows to highlight the “Apps” icon.
  • Press the Select or OK button to open the Apps screen and give it a second to load.

Step 2: Open App Settings

Once I’m in Apps, I head to the Settings gear so I can see every installed app in one place. That way, I don’t have to hunt around different menus.

On the Apps screen, this is what I do to open App Settings:

  • On the Apps screen, move to the Settings gear icon (usually at the top right).
  • Press Select or OK to open App Settings.
  • Check that you now see a list or grid of your installed apps.

Step 3: Highlight the app and open its options

Now that the full list is visible, I scroll to find the app that’s causing problems or taking up space. Before deleting anything, I always make sure I’ve got the right one selected, then pull up its options.

When the list of installed apps appears, I narrow in on the one I want to remove:

  • Use the arrow keys to move through your installed apps.
  • Stop on the app you want to uninstall and double-check the logo and name.
  • With the app highlighted, press and hold the Select or OK button (or use the on-screen options button), depending on your model.
  • Wait for the Options menu to slide up on the screen.

Step 4: Delete the app and wrap up

This is where you actually clear out the clutter. After confirming that you don’t need the app anymore, you can remove it, then repeat the process for any other unused apps.

Once the options menu pops up, I finish removing the app by doing the following:

  • Choose “Delete” from the options list.
  • Note: Selecting “Remove” will hide the app from the Home screen; it will not uninstall.
  • Confirm when your TV asks if you’re sure you want to uninstall, and let it finish the removal before backing out.
  • Repeat these steps for any other apps you want to uninstall, then press Home to return to your main screen and enjoy a cleaner layout.
  • You’ll see a “Deleted successfully” message when the app has been uninstalled.

Special case: Removing pre-installed apps

You can't delete some apps marked as “pre-installed” or “default” in the usual way. But some users have shared workarounds that occasionally unlock the Delete option. Here’s what’s worked for me:

  • In the Apps section, press the Settings (gear) icon.
  • Navigate to the desired pre-installed app.
  • Lock the app (using the Lock/Unlock option if available), then perform a “deep link test” (enter random content when prompted), and this may unlock the ability to delete the app.

Results vary depending on your TV model and software version, and this trick isn’t officially supported by Samsung, so try at your own risk.

If you find the Delete option is still grayed out, you might only be able to “Remove” (hide) or “Reinstall” the app, not uninstall it entirely.

Troubleshooting & extra tips

If the Delete button is missing

The app may be system-essential or locked by your Smart TV’s firmware. Try rebooting the TV after running a software update and repeat the process.

For apps stuck or glitched

Delete and reinstall. Hold select, choose Delete, then search for the app in the Apps store to add it back fresh.

Freeing up space

Uninstalling unused apps can help with performance. I run through my list every few months, especially before installing new streaming services or big games.

Can’t clear the cache? On older TVs, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app to refresh its storage.

Why uninstall apps?

Deleting extra apps frees up limited onboard storage, speeds up navigation, and reduces app crashes.

When my TV is loaded with old sports, kids, and holiday apps, I notice sluggish menu response and slower updates. A quick app purge brings back that “fresh TV” feeling, like a whole new device!
